Medicare for All Would Burden Both Seniors and the Young

Tomas Philipson

Medicare for All would dissolve the program built for older Americans and send a $47.4 trillion bill to younger ones. Seniors would trade a program to them for a reduced program when the program would become universal. And this is if the program remained fiscally feasible at all which is highly unlikely. Younger workers would pay for it through the highest tax increases in U.S. history or a debt load more than twice the size of the economy. In addition, they would lose their current coverage enabled through private competition to be forced into a government monopoly plan.
